lyrics

by Christopher K.P. Brown

Swords cut the tape
showed their lord then they raped
prohibited our drums
still, the tracks we make
Utopia's last rebels
knowledge blankets the treble
bumping Jigga, D'evils
but Malcolm once called them devils
for pillaging native land
I man with a turban told me that our circumstance
was certainly something difficult to understand
how bottom boys crawl through struggles
to become men of high rank
only for america to leave us scarred
dishonorable discharge when we say how we do this for community
instead of Franklins, Hamiltons, and Lincolns
I wasn't motivated by presidents til 2009
to understand that is to understand my bloodline
and Black Wallstreet
the Watts Riots
Nat Turner
Nat Turner
the red tape that took our 40 acres
racist Quakers
the makers of this nation never got their portion
the chronicles of a people beautiful as the Harlem Renaissance
ugly as bombing four little girls
influential as Fela
making music that touches the whole world
and heals home at the same time
this bloody bandage on my society
translates as red tape.
